Sourcing
Melaleuca, or tea tree, is native to Australia. It thrives in sunny climates and moist soil. In Australia, tea tree grows from spring, through summer, and into autumn.

Certain areas of Kenya also have similar conditions for its growth as Australia, so tea tree also grows abundantly there. By sourcing Tea Tree essential oil partly from Kenya, we support smallholder farmers in the country's rural regions while continuing to obtain the highest quality essential oil.
Tea tree is a shrub-like, evergreen tree. The essential oil made from it is extracted from the leaves by steam distillation. Originally, it was used by the Indigenous Australians for health purposes, and then at the outbreak of World War II, many soldiers in the Australian army carried a small bottle of Tea Tree essential oil with them to war.
The Australian tea tree plantation that sources doTERRA is the natural habitat of kangaroos. The trees bear fruit from spring to late autumn, and harvesting only takes place during the winter months to extend the fruiting period as much as possible. Harvesting can be done on the same trees year after year, as the trees begin to regenerate three to six weeks after harvesting. Thanks to sustainable harvesting practices, the Australian tea tree plantations have continuously been able to enhance the integrity and productivity of the same land for 18 years.
